Afton's tooth had been wiggly since we were in India. Lucky we made it home before it decided to come out. He asked if he could keep it rather than put it under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy, but after a week or so he randomly declared while I was tucking him in, that he had put the tooth under his pillow. He ended up with a $10 bill since that was the smallest amount of currency I had in my purse. He looks pretty darn cute with that little gap, and now the tooth next to it is loose. I better break the $20 I have into much smaller bills, or possibly coins, before it's too late!

some not so good pictures of the tooth
Have I mentioned how hard it is keeping an almost one year old still?
Well, these pictures prove it.
Can you make out the tooth?

Tooth and Steps
So there really should be pictures of both these milestones but I'm just too excited to wait for this post....
We have a tooth!
AND we've got her first steps!
This weekend Rowan was really fussy. She has had swollen bottom gums for what seems like forever. I decided to put a little orajel on them when she was having a particularly bad time with it, and what did I find!? Yup, one little tooth has made it's entrance.
Then today, actually about an hour ago, Nippon, Rowan, and I were playing on the floor. Nippon and I were sitting across from each other, holding Rowan in a standing position, and helping her walk across the living room floor. She wouldn't let go of our hands at first but then she took a couple of steps on her own and we both burst into cheers. That made her super excited and decided she wanted to keep doing that. It eventually lead to her walking all the way from one of us to the other...about 6 steps all on her own! She is still pretty wobbly and prefers the faster method of crawling, but I suspect she'll be fully walking in a couple of weeks.

Pearly Whites
On Monday Mr. Afton went to the dentist for the first time. He went with me to my appointment last week to check it out and see what it looks like to have your teeth cleaned. He liked it at first but then got extremely bored (it does take a while, especially with friendly and chatty hygienists) and a little scared of the sounds. Needless to say, he wasn't very excited to come back until the hygienist informed him he would be able to pick a prize form the treasure box after his exam.
Waiting for his name to be called. He changed seats probably 10 times. The boy couldn't sit still he was so excited.
All ready for his exam. Trying out the dentist chair...up, down. So cool mom!
This picture was taken while he stared at his x-rays. He was pretty amazed at what his teeth look like (and so was I), especially the adult teeth still growing in his jaw bone.
I'm so glad everything went smoothly. He has a fear of loud noises and very strong gag reflex, so I was totally prepared to have them make a referral to a pediatric dentist. Yay for not having to do that. And another yay for clean and healthy teeth! Good job big boy!

More Teef
Since teeth have been on the mind, I wanted to document the growth of Afton's pearly whites. His first teeth (he got the top two at the same time) started coming in last year while we were in India. They started swelling at the beginning of October 2009 and were in around Christmas, which was when his bottom two teeth began their arrival. He has had those 4 teeth since January and it seemed that he would never get any more. Finally he started to get his next two teeth (on the top) in July and that started a full on bloom of them. Currently he is getting the two teeth next to his bottom ones as well as two bottom molars! He is super drolly and is constantly chewing on his fingers. Luckily he isn't too whiny, but there have been some days that he wakes up really early or doesn't want to nap because they are bothering him. I have given him teething tabs, which work for a little while. He seems to thinks they are candy or something even though they have no flavor. I also tried Orajel. He hates it! I have resorted to some pain meds to give him a little relief, but I do that sparingly. Overall though he hasn't been to grumpy, and I'm excited that he will be able to chew up his food better. Hopefully I won't have to give him puree fruits and veggies any more. Yay for teeth!

Teef
Today I went to the dentist for the first time in 12 years. I know, I know. Stupid, but that's what happens when you have no insurance. Actually I've had dental insurance for about 3 years now and should have done this much sooner but getting my teeth cleaned and checked on hasn't been in my routine in ages. Better late than never. Right?
Anyhoo...I had a great check-up! They were all surprised that it had been so long. I have two small cavities that will be filled on the 20th, but other than that they said my teeth look fabulous. Yay for me! Of course they think I should get my wisdom teeth out. Boo.They don't bother me and aren't causing any problems so it's not high on my list of things to do. So, even though I hadn't seen the dentist in FOREVER I was definitely conscious of my oral hygiene and it paid off. I rule.
